The Weston Rhyn Choir was formed in 1980 but on January 9th
1995 an inaugural meeting was held ‘to take over the assets and
activities’ of that informal group and endorse a constitution.
The constitution states that the aims of the Weston Rhyn Choir
shall be to give an opportunity to residents of Weston Rhyn and
surrounding communities to;
Rehearse and perform mixed choir choral music of all types and
styles.
Develop and improve their singing and musical skills.
Give public concerts with or without others for charitable or other
purposes .
Carry out activities of a broadly similar nature, including social
activities, in pursuance of the above objectives.
The choir has given concerts for many, many organisations, free
of charge, to help them raise money. They sing in Churches, for
the elderly in residential care and have competed on Radio Shropshire
and at some local eisteddfods.
They have performed with the local Brass and Silver Bands and have
introduced some talented young musicians into their environment.
They were among the thousand voices at the West Midlands Show in
the past.
Autumn 2004. To date the
Choir have two concerts on their agenda, one at the Parish Hall in the
village of Criftins near Ellesmere, Shropshire and one, organised by
the choir in aid of Nightingale House, Wrexham, to be held at the
Moor's Chapel in St.Martins, Shropshire on Oct.22nd.04.
Mr Graham Wright MBE was the conductor in 1980 and is still the
conductor of today, however he
is to retire as conductor at the end of this year after 25 years
and will then become our new President in place of Mr. Bill Machin who
retired last year after years of service from both him and his late
wife, a choir member.
£250 was sent to
Nightingale House Wrexham as a result of both concerts and a donation
from the Choir.
At the 2005 A.G.M. Mr.
Ged Cliffe accepted an invitation to take over as Musical director
from Mr Wright later in the year.
